Why use Speckle Park Bulls
A Speckle Park bull will add value, regardless of whether you have a dairy or beef herd. Calves have a low to moderate birth weight, averaging 30 to 40kgs at birth and are very quick to get up on their feet to drink, as they have a vigorous survival instinct.
The Dairy Herd
Speckle Park bulls have been used very successfully over Dairy herds here in New Zealand for some years. The resulting calves are very saleable, often achieving a higher price per head than any other crossbred beef calf. Calf rearers have found young calves to be smart and quick to adapt to being raised on feeders, with very good growth rates. The calves are easily sold on, once weaned onto grass.
The Beef Herd
Speckle Park cattle are hardy, resilient and are very efficient at converting grass into kilos of top-quality beef. They mature early and it is not uncommon for cross-bred animals to have carcass yields of 60% and over. They are a moderate framed animal with depth, softness, and doing ability in both good seasons and poor. They thrive in all climates, from the extremely cold Canadian winters of -35 below to +35 in the hot dry environments of Australia.
The breed has been winning carcass competitions around the world. Their meat has the desired high marbling which meat processors, specialist butchers and consumers are prepared to pay a premium price for. This top-quality beef can be produced on grass alone.
The Consumer
Speckle Park beef has been winning carcass and taste competions across the world. The meat is marbled, tender and is packed full of flavour. The majority of Speckle Park beef produced in New Zealand is exported to countries where consumers demand top-quality beef.
All of the commercial cross-bred Speckle Park beef we have raised has been exported overseas, the majority of it going to Japan.
Speckle Park beef has an eating quality comparable to Wagyu, however the majority of Wagyu cattle are fed grain on feedlots to achieve the sought after high marbling in the meat, where as a Speckle Park animal can achieve good marbling from grazing on grass here in NZ.
